FREMONT, CA: Small cell is finally here to ease the pressure on macro cells. The full-scale deployment of small cells in NFL cities has now replaced the sporadic pilots which were hailed as the success of small cells. With the technology in place and all other details worked out, small cells is ready to pave the way for 5G to take centre stage. Traditional macro tower vendors that had dominated during the deployment of 3G and 4G networks have failed to make significant headway in the domain of the small cell.

Here are three simple steps to ensure proper deployment of small cells.

Quantity over Quality

In macro towers, the quality makes the difference. The engineering integrity and quality of finish determine the quality of the service provided. For small cells, it is the complete opposite. Small cells is more of a numbers game. The more the quantity, the better the service. In addition, instead of specializing in intricate details, small cells look to keep it simple and familiar, making it easier to produce in large quantities.

Minimizing Eye Contact

Small cell devices are much smaller in size than traditional towers and will be placed at eye level. There is a high possibility that you may come across one in your day to day life and yet not know what you have seen. These can look like small electrical junction boxes and blend into the surroundings. The aesthetic aspect of the design comes into place when the number of small cell devices starts to increase. At present, these are very few in number, a few hundreds. But once the hundreds become thousands and expand further, it will be visible to the naked eye. When such a scenario arises, the design and placement of these devices will also matter.

Adding more Fiber

Due to the 4G push, traditional macro towers have one or more fibre connectivity options. Small cells also require a certain amount of fibre construction, either underground or aerial. The existing fibre infrastructure was laid down without keeping in mind the capacity requirements of small cells, 5G, and modern enterprise broadband. This means new inner ducts or entirely new conduit need to be constructed. Along with entitlements, fibre can be one of the long poles in the small cells installation process. For any company to be successful in the 5G domain, they need to have strong fibre capabilities, or at least strong fibre partnerships, in order to make headway in the field.
