The research done by Juniper Research also forecasts that an extensive roaming model or the wholesale model will be decisive in mitigating the risks and threats from high data traffic. The data traffic is generated by modern-day technologies, such as rich communication service (RCS) and 5G. To secure the use of each other's mobile networks, the operators formed a bilateral agreement among themselves, which is known as the wholesale roaming model. The agreements were made on the pre-aged costs and text messaging, fair usage of voice, and data services while roaming.

The existing wholesale roaming agreements need to be amended to accommodate vast amounts of data traffic generated by 5G connections, forecasted the Juniper Research.
