Fremont, CA: Prior to COVID-19, the Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) market was still in its early stages. Now that the home office is as common as the work office, enterprise networking requirements have shifted. Connectivity must be fast, secure, and dependable regardless of where employees connect from around the world.
With no signs of the 9-to-5 office lifestyle returning, businesses must optimize their networks to handle complex as well as constantly shifting data requirements across multiple locations and cloud providers—and SD-WAN has quickly become the solution. According to the Dell'Oro Group, global sales of SD-WAN technologies are expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 24 percent over the next five years, with the market exceeding US$4 billion in 2025.

Gartner's Secure Access Service Edge (SASE or "sassy"), which bundles SD-WAN and security services like Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) and FWaaS (Firewall as a Service), has begun to be offered by major SD-WAN providers.
Not all sites are created equal; some require high-speed, low-latency fiber connections, whereas others can function with slower connections. SD-WAN allows for traffic prioritization, which increases flexibility and cost control.
These benefits have been demonstrated—Cisco reports that using SD-WAN resulted in a 65 percent lower cost of connectivity, a 58 percent faster implementation of policy and configuration changes, and a 94 percent reduction in unplanned downtime, among other advantages.
In traditional WAN deployments, setting up links to new sites can be complicated and time-consuming. SD-WAN pushes security, policies, and custom configurations to the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), which reduces manual effort and simplifies the system and process management. Furthermore, SD-WAN enables network traffic segmentation and prioritization via a control console.
